An Open “Thank You” Letter to Senator Romney Following the Vote

On February 5, 2020, Senator Mitt Romney gave a speech on the Senate floor to explain his tremendously courageous vote to convict President Trump on one article of impeachment. He said, “Like each member of this deliberative body, I love our country. I believe that our Constitution was inspired by Providence. I am convinced that freedom itself is dependent on the strength and vitality of our national character. As it is with each senator, my vote is an act of conviction.”

Mormon Women for Ethical Government wrote the following open letter to Senator Romney, which hundreds of citizens have signed to echo their thanks.

Dear Senator Romney,

Thank you. Today you spoke out in defense of our constitutional norms and the rule of law. You cast a vote for the balance of powers and the institutional integrity of the Senate. You cast a vote in defense of free elections and the fair exercise of our national power. But most importantly, you cast a vote in defense of truth and with the power of personal conscience.

We join you in expressing our commitment to these principles. As citizens, we are grateful for your willingness to act at great personal cost and express our commitment to find ways that we too will join you in acting courageously in defense of our democracy.

Thank you for your leadership and faithfulness to the principles of American governance.

With gratitude,

Courtney Orton, Tooele, UT

Alisyn Rogerson, Durham, NC

Thank you for standing for the right. Thank you for taking your oath before God seriously. You have given me hope in this seemingly hopeless battle for our lawmakers to be people who will stand for truth and set partisanism aside. You reminded me of the Book of Mormon prophet Samuel. He had arrows coming from every direction but he still climbed the wall, he still chose to stand on the wall, and despite the arrows he still delivered his message.
Shauna Fisher, Valley View, TX

Jamie Nopper, North Salt Lake, UT

You give me hope for the future of this country! Thank you for being willing to stand up for what you know is true — even if the face of great opposition. Please know that there are thousands of us that stand behind you!

Your speech and integrity moved me to tears today. Thank you.
Kate Murphy, Phoenix, AZ

Christine Miller, Springville, UT

Senator Romney, thank you for placing truth above political party.  If every senator had as much courage and integrity as you, the president would have been impeached today. While your vote may not have tipped the scale, it stands as a beacon of light and truth for those of us in the country who are trying to combat the onslaught of lies coming from the president and his politically elected and appointed lackeys. Please continue to stand for the right in all the best ways.
Erin Traverso, Wallingford, PA

Allison Adams, Salt Lake City, UT

Your father would be proud of you. You followed in his footsteps to follow your moral compass over the power as it currently stands.  I am proud of you and proud of sharing faith with you. It has been hard to see so many others of our faith who have not shown that courage. I pledge that I will donate to your campaign for re-election because of this act of courage. I sincerely thank you.
Dr. Emily Bates, Denver, CO

Emily Palmer, Tucson, AZ

I have friends of diverse Christian, Jewish, and Muslim traditions who are praising not only you, but your faith (and mine) because of your courage and integrity. “Apparently Mormons take their faith commitment more seriously than Evangelicals,” one of my friends wrote today. You didn’t do this to advance the reputation or good name of your faith; you did it because it was right — but this now reflects well on all of us who share your faith and aspire to be followers of Christ. Thank you for that. Tomorrow when I begin my personal prayers with “Hallowed be thy name,” I’ll think of how you have brought honor to the name of God, and I’ll be moved to show like courage and integrity in my own sphere of activity. Whatever comes next, for you, for our country, there is now a bit more potential for right choices. You’ve shown the way.
Mark Ellison, Cedar Hills, UT

Robin VanderRoest, Kalamazoo, MI

Thank you so much for your courage in both casting your vote today and in your speech explaining why and defending right and moral responsibility. I have been uncomfortable for some time identifying as a Republican for some time now despite being registered as one because of the lack of moral leadership within the party, but if asked I would be proud to describe myself as a Romney Republican. I have been praying for our leaders to have wisdom, integrity and the courage to do what is right and I feel like those prayers have been heard after listening to your speech. Thank you.
Camille Warner, Lehi, UT

Thank you for your tremendous courage and leadership.

Senator Romney, THANK YOU for your integrity. You are a powerful reminder to everyone of the importance of honor in politics. I’m so grateful you represent Utah.
Emily Milner, Lindon, UT

Thank you, I had goosebumps as I listened to you. I prayed that at least a few of your colleagues would have their conscience touched and follow you in bravery. I am saddened that none did. Today, I saw that you have what it takes to lead this nation, I saw a strong, steady hand guided by character and conviction. I saw someone, though not of my party, I would be proud to have as a president.
Nancy Bonk, Virginia Beach, VA

Thank you for representing all of us conservatives who value the constitution and truth above political partisanship. You are a great example of courage to everyone for standing up to the party establishment — thank you for being the voice of sanity! It feels so good knowing that Trump does not have party solidarity supporting his corruption. You rock, Senator Romney!
Audrey Sherwood, West Lafayette, IN

Erin Langford, South Jordan, UT

It’s a crying shame that John F. Kennedy (and Ted Sorensen) are no longer alive. If they were, they would need to add an additional chapter to Profiles in Courage, thanks to you. I find President Trump to be deeply troubling, but even if I were among his ardent supporters, I could still find it in me to respect and applaud what you have done. I don’t live in Utah anymore, but if I still did, I would have voted for you in your first Senate election — and in the second as well.
Garry Wilmore, Chandler, AZ

Thank you, thank you, thank you. So refreshing to see someone who can vote the dictates of conscience rather than voting based on fear of reelection or retribution from a morally challenged leader.
Lorelei Draper, Springville, UT

As a young college student increasingly disenfranchised with the American political system, thank you for being a shining beacon of integrity, morality, and patriotism in your willingness to weather the coming storm in your act of voting to convict Donald Trump. Thank you for doing what is right, for following your heart, for standing blamelessly before God in this act of honesty, and for moving me to tears in your heartfelt public expression of your decision. May you receive strength, resilience, and whatever blessings heaven sees fit to bestow on you as a result of this decision. You have my deepest respect, support, and will be in my prayers. God bless you. Well done.
Jaxon Washburn, Gilbert, AZ

Rachel Lorraine Pullan, Clearfield, UT

Leighanna Pilling, Eagle, ID

Pamela Nebeker, Millcreek, UT

Thank you, Senator Romney. Integrity is by far the most important character trait in a public official. Thank you for voting your conscience; thank you for standing up to the president and to your party, when nobody else was willing to do so. This decision had a much bigger consequence, for good, than a vote to acquit could have. This is a first and vital step in saving our Republic — our representative democracy and our Constitution. I wish more people who know better would do the same. It may be a good time to leave the Republican Party and become an independent.

Andi Puempel, Logan, UT

I imagine in the coming months and even years you will face criticism for the brave action you displayed today. In those moments, I hope you can recall the millions of Americans who applaud you for doing what is right. In fact, your response to Wallace in an interview today were the words to a beloved hymn “Do What is Right.” I wanted to share a few more lines that I feel are pertinent to you today: “Truth goeth onward, then do what is right.” “Eyes that are wet now, ere long will be tearless. Blessings await you in doing what’s right.” And though the acquittal was no surprise to many of us, I will close with the last words of the hymn: “And with stout hearts look ye forth til tomorrow. God will protect you; then do what is right!”

Sara Grant, Saratoga Springs, UT

Heidi Van Natter, Farmington, UT

Veronika Tait, Saratoga Springs, UT

Thank you for your great courage today. As a fellow Mormon and believer in our faith, I especially appreciate your stand. It is very difficult at times to be a Mormon who openly stands against Trump and most of his actions. It can be a lonely place to be, which is sad considering these very actions by Trump are so opposite from those things we learn about our Savior. I have some small idea of the cost of your brave vote and will pray for your family. Know this, you can hold your head high knowing you voted your conscience and you did what was right. You are a hero to me. A true hero. May you be ultimately blessed for your courage. It may take time, but one day I do believe you will be remembered a the hero you are. The Constitution is hanging by a thread as foretold. You are doing your part to save it! “Stand up for what is right even if you stand alone.”

Laura Mercer, Madera, CA

Sharlee Mullins Glenn, Pleasant Grove, UT

Jeanine Bean, Turlock, CA

Thank you for representing those of us who don’t choose to look past Mr. Trump’s high crimes and misdemeanors merely because the stock market happens to be up and he (Mr. Trump) mouths the types of platitudes that his nominal party members want to hear. Though I currently work and live in Idaho, I consider you, Mr. Romney, my true representative in the US Congress. Thank you for your courageous stand for what you (and I) believe to be right.

Your speech moved me to tears. I similarly could not deny the truth as conveyed by the evidence presented, and it has lightened a burden b of fear for my country to hear you, one of our elected Republican leaders acknowledge the gravity of what the president did. I honor and admire tour courage and integrity and hope that your example will enable more Republicans to have the courage to stand up to leaders who abuse their power — no matter what their party. Thank you.
Bethany Scott, Los Alamos, NM

I tried to call and leave you a voicemail but your office mailbox is full. I am not surprised. And, sadly, I am sure you will be receiving many angry voicemails and emails from some of your loudest critics, but I wanted to add my voice so you know there are those of us out here (in Utah) who are incredibly proud of what you did today. Thank you, Sir, for being someone who puts their promise to God above their pressure to conform to a political party objective. Thank you for being an example of the believers when it was hard and everyone was watching. Thank you for putting aside bias as best as you could and for seeing the truth as it was clearly laid out. Thank you for voting for witnesses to try to make the process more fleshed out and fair. I am not a Democrat or a Republican. I find the parties to be too constricting and far too often people get blinded to any good on the other side or bad on their own side. I listened to this whole trial and tried to put my own bias aside and to hear what the evidence and reason showed. It seemed so clear to me that President Trump abused his power, but I wondered if ANY Republicans would be brave enough to listen to this trial with their consciences and to see and hear without malice. You have shown me that at least you were. I was brought to tears listening to your explanation today. I was surprised it touched me so much, but I think it was the shred of hope that you touched. Thank you for your thoughtful explanation of why you voted the way you did and your charitable view of why others voted as they will. I believe you that you did what you had to do because your conscience and covenant before God demanded it of you. As the hymn says, “Do what is right let the consequence follow.” Thank you for giving me an example to talk to my daughter about tonight. Thank you for standing up for our Country and our God today.

I feel that you have followed the counsel of living prophets through example. Thank you and God bless and protect you, your works, and your family.

Senator, I have been tearful twice today. Once, when you were speaking about your faith, and how it is who you are, and then again, when the final vote was taken. I too am fighting for what is right, so I can look my kids and future grandkids in the eye and say that I fought as hard as I could for honesty and truth. I have a tile in my home that says, “It’s easy to stand with the crowd, it takes courage to stand alone.” I will think of your bravery when I walk by that tile. Thank you, thank you. . .  from the bottom of my heart.

I reached out to Senator Braun and Senator Young multiple times about calling witnesses and having a fair trial rather than voting on party lines. Asking for help from a foreign government to win an election is constitutionally wrong. Mr. Braun replies back to me before the trial even started to state the whole thing was a hoax and that he would vote to acquit. Thank you for hearing the trial as is your sworn duty and for defending the constitution.
Tyler Siefring, Indianapolis, IN

Thank you, Senator Romney, for doing what is right, not what is politically expedient.
Geoffrey Dean, Champlin, MN

Thank you so much.
SaraJo Martin, Riverton, UT

Dear Senator — your courageous decision to vote for impeachment reminded me of this quote from President Thomas S. Monson – “May we maintain the courage to defy the consensus. Senator Romney, to be completely honest I haven’t always been a huge fan of yours, but I sure am today. I stand in awe of your vote today and the sincere thought that you put into this decision. Doing the right thing regardless of consequences is a rare occurrence in today’s political world, and I’m embarrassed to say I gravely underestimated you. I want you to know that it matters to me, and I’m grateful. It’s important that you know some of us do stand behind you and are fighting for more ethical, peaceful discourse in politics. Integrity is a solid first step. Thank you for giving me a shred of hope today. I needed it.
Melissa Leatherwood, Eagle Mountain, UT

Dear Senator, I’m so grateful for your unfailing integrity. Please know that you do not stand alone. Many of your fellow Utahns and fellow Americans stand with you and thank you. Your example is priceless, not only to your children and grandchildren, but to ours. God bless you and your family.

Joi Pearson, Orem, UT

Sharon Thueson, Hagerman, ID

I respect any senator whose vote was truly impartial, regardless of what that vote was. You may be alone among senators, but you have a sizable and enthusiastic cheering section.

Anneke Garcia, Salt Lake City, UT

Dear Senator, our family of 4 boys ages 9-17 watched your speech at dinner tonight and had an important conversation about what your words taught us. We admire your publicly stated conviction, to hold on to an oath that you made to God and our country. Your courage in voting your conscience and putting our country before party exemplifies leadership. I am an unaffiliated voter here in Utah because I have lost faith in our 2 party system which continues to reach new polarizing extremes with each breaking headline. Your vote encourages me to continue to participate civically both locally and nationally and to teach this to my children. You reminded us that even when one vote will not change an outcome, voting our conscience is a right we must exercise to protect freedom. Thank you for this important lesson and leadership.
Jessica Osborn, Draper, UT

Thank you for your example of courage and conviction in the face of great opposition.
Michelle Buhler, Duluth, MN

David McMillan, Layton, UT

Elisabeth Gomez, Pleasant Grove, UT

Melissa Inouye, Draper, UT

Mary Smith, Bloomington, IL

Thank you for taking a stand. You acted as did Dietrich Bonhoeffer. He chose to act based on his strong faith in Christ and so did you. I’m so sorry that you will suffer for it. I suspect that there is no other way than to suffer when standing for truth in the face of lies. Heavenly Father knows your heart. I am sure He is proud of you for taking such an action. And I am grateful for someone to act on my behalf who considers my thoughts and wellbeing worth standing up for. I have been promised that I will “live to see the Constitution restored.” I know His promises will come to pass. In God we trust. Thank you. Thank you.
Elizabeth Moore, Boise, ID

Kimberly Chytraus, Holladay, UT

Can you please run for President one more time? Thank you for applying your faith in such a tremendous difficult way. You are a beacon of light and hope in a world where moral courage is expressed far and few in between. I will never forget this moment in our US history.

If only others would have also acted on principle.
Julie Hawke, Kalamazoo, MI

Long before you were elected, I lived in UT for over a decade. I pretty much spent my 20s as a Utahn. I’ve since moved away, but lasting connections to the Beehive State make it my home away from home. I wish I could say I wasn’t surprised by your vote, but I was… pleasantly. Thank you — not only for your honest vote as a sworn juror, but also for the eloquence with which you explained it.
David Broadbent, New York, NY

MIchelle Ackerman, NYC, NY

You’ve restored my hope!

Thank you for speaking up. There was clearly nothing you were going to gain politically and likely much to lose. As a life-long Republican, I’ve had to rethink my party affiliation. Glad one Republican is left with a shred of moral conscience. Sadly, this party blindness to Trump’s outrageous behavior makes it impossible for me, and many of my friends, to continue to support the Republican Party. Thank you for your courage.
Michele Steed, Okemos, MI

Jill Ensign, Lehi, UT

I tell my children often that they will come up against people who will want to do the wrong thing, but that I hope they will choose to do the right thing instead — even if they lose friends. I am incredibly honored to tell your story to my children. Thank you, thank you for standing up and standing out even while risking so much. I hope our words of gratitude will ring loudly over any opposition you may face.

Senator Romney, today I was so proud to call you my senator. Your speech brought me to tears. Thank you so much for voting with your conscience today and for upholding your oath of office. You did just what I have come to expect from you and gave me a little hope all is not lost at this incredibly divisive time.
Melissa Hayford, Ogden, UT

Kerry Wickman, Salt Lake City, UT

Thank you for being one of the few trustworthy politicians. You are an example of honestly and integrity and I so appreciate your impartial vote!
Andra Meyer, Lehi, UT

Watching tribalism and hyperpartisanship tear apart the nation has left me struggling to hang onto hope for my country, but I am not exaggerating when I say that knowing that you took that oath seriously and were willing to listen to the dictates of your conscience over the dictates of your party has given me the hope I need. If the Lord would pardon Jerusalem for one man who “executeth judgment” and “seeketh truth” (Jeremiah 5:1), surely I can say the same for Washington, thanks to you.
Marianna Martindale, College Park, MD

I’m just so proud of you! So proud that you were true to your faith, our Heavenly Father, your oaths, your covenants. You represented truth so respectfully and eloquently. The good you did today will change lives for good. Just watch and see. Thank you!

Kaylene Nielsen, Moscow, ID

Marc Nuttall, Alpine, UT

Thank you for reminding the country what integrity and courage look like! Beautiful speech!
Kendra Halterman, Phoenix, AZ

Thank you for remembering what a patriot looks like and how one behaves. It seems we have forgotten the lessons learned early in life regarding behavior and working together as a team. Compromise is not a bad thing and usually means we all win… something. Please continue to work with both sides. Wouldn’t it be great if there was only one side working in unison for our greater good. A girl can dream.
Sharin Greenleaf, San Jose, CA

Thank you for showing that we always have a choice, and for choosing righteousness
Heather Sullivan, Heber City, UT

Thank you for standing up for right and integrity amidst great pressure and animosity. I had long given up on any such expectations from Washington D.C.

Brad Pickett, Provo, UT

Thank you, Senator Romney! You have shown tremendous courage in voting for what is right, and it is inspiring to the rest of us.
Eliza Esquibel, Lacey, WA

What a hard and courageous decision you made today. There is no personal or political advantage in your vote which makes it all the more powerful. Listening to your speech on the Senate floor I could hear the ring of conscience in your voice. Your reasons were balanced, careful and true. I am glad to have a Senator representing my state who understands the importance of integrity and who honors his oaths to God. We need more people who will do the hard right thing and not take the coward’s way out. We need more political leaders who act the way you did today.
MaryJan Munger, Huntsville, UT

Thank you so much for standing on the side of truth. I appreciate your ability to be impartial.
Meryni Hall, Eugene, OR

Darcy Jewell, American Fork, UT

Jolet Olsen, Salt Lake City, UT

My heart has been breaking as I have watched numerous neighbors, friends, and family members fall into what appears to be a cult-like acceptance of anything the president says or does. I have tried to alert them to the inconsistencies in the explanations given by his enablers, defenders, and the man himself, but to little avail. A growing cloud of despair has hovered over me. Your vote to convict has permitted a beam of light to break through that despair. Thank you so much for the hope that you have made me feel.

Chelisa Pack, La Mesa, CA

Mark Egan, Saint Anthony, ID

Wendi Nelson, Spanish Fork, UT

TerryAnn Harward, Payson, UT

I am also a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. When you ran for president people often asked if I planned on voting for you (the assumption being that because we have a shared religion that I would… I didn’t). My answer was no and my reason being it seemed you had lost your convictions and principles and were willing to say what seemed politically convenient to win votes. Thank you for finding those convictions and principles again.
John Holbrook, Spokane, WA

I’ve never been prouder of someone whose faith I share than I was today Senator. Your courage and adherence to core values is an inspiration and a story I will share in my family history throughout many generations.  Thank you for taking a stand even though the consequences may be great. I hear many praising your name tonight for what you did today.

I actually live in Canada (my sister in Seattle is a member of MWEG). To Senator Romney — the world was watching the events in the US Senate unfold today. There are countless people in this world that still believe in truth, in the rule of law, in moral courage, and in conscience above partisanship. Thank you so very, very much for standing up for what is right and having the moral courage to follow your conscience and defend your constitution. We are so very grateful for your moral leadership.  You are truly a beacon for Canadians and for the world. I often find government and legislation confusing. So I try to elect smart, diplomatic, moral people with integrity who will represent me by doing their homework, working together with others to get things done, and standing up for what’s right. You have done just that, Senator Romney! Though I no longer live in Utah, I am proud that there is a senator from my home state who stood up for what he believed was right when nobody else in his party was willing to do so. Well done!
Merinda Cutler, Round Rock, TX

Your vote gave me a glimmer of hope in politics that I haven’t felt in a while.
Michael Witting, Orem, UT

Thank you for doing the right thing!

I don’t know when I’ve been as proud of a politician, let alone one who was a member of the church. If some people in our state think that somehow you have been a traitor, I will personally stand up for you in any setting as someone who has chosen to do the right thing regardless of what comes after. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Mitt. I’m so proud to know you.

Louisa Eastley, Provo, UT

Your vote made this day one of peace and hope. Thank you, thank you. You have my vote if you run again.
Alyssa May, Orem, UT

Senator Romney: Thank you, for the courage displayed today. I was deeply touched, and in fact wept, as I listened to your speech today. But then I wept again after your speech, as it became apparent that country-over-party and civil discourse and respectful language and behavior have all become nearly extinct in Washington. Thank you for the integrity and leadership your actions the past week have demonstrated. While there are many noisy voices on social media and the airwaves, there are even more people who quietly respect and applaud your lonely decision. I am one of them. God bless you. God bless America.
Chris Ogden, Lehi, UT

Thank you, Senator Romney, for your courage in voting as you did today. Your speech was eloquent and moving. As a mother and woman of faith, I was deeply touched by your commitment to your convictions and our country’s ideals and laws. You gave voice to the many in your home state and around the country who are deeply troubled by Trump’s lack of ethical and moral leadership and his utter disregard for the truth. Thank you for letting me feel seen and heard and for standing for what is right. Your bravery will always be remembered.

I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Recently, I’ve been disillusioned by support of this president in Utah just because he is a Republican. Frankly, it has undermined my faith. I cannot understand why other LDS neighbors and politicians haven’t followed the still small voice like you. Your example reminds me of Abinadi. I pray my friends and family will reflect on your decision and words today.  Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Senator Romney, I know there will be a lot of people who throw dirt at you for making this decision. You knew that when you made this decision, and you still did it because you were following your heart and doing what you felt was right. I think you did the right thing. And I’m so grateful for a representative like you in government and in religion. Thank you so much for making history in this way. I’m so proud of you. Dalene Rowley, Provo, UT

Kate Furuya, Flagstaff, AZ

I have been very discouraged and depressed, particularly this week, because of what I have been witnessing during this impeachment process. I watched your beautiful and profound speech yesterday and was moved to tears. I was so impressed with your courage to do what is right, despite the intense criticism you knew you would face. Thank you for being brave. Thank you for doing what was right. It may not have made a difference in the outcome, but it made a difference to me.

Kimberly Wagner, Fruit Heights, UT

I’m so grateful that you, Mr. Romney, not only voted with morals and integrity, but that you also gave the speech you did. Both actions took a tremendous amount of courage. Your speech said it all — honesty and integrity in politics matter. I hope some of your colleagues are taking in your actions and gaining courage from your example. I’m not in your senate district, I’m not a Republican, and I’m not a Mormon. But, I am an American. You demonstrated today how all elected officials should act. Thank you for setting the example. I know your father is looking down on you with pride and your family and church are looking up at you with pride and gratitude for living your beliefs.

I am not your constituent but AM a member of the Church, and find it distressing to see so much vitriol towards you by other members. Please know that there is also much support. Thank you for following your God-given conscience.
Stacey Fiala, Aurora, CO

Thank you for demonstrating integrity, honor, and duty to God. I am an elementary school teacher, and often quotes from children’s literature pop into my mind. Today, as I listened to your speech, I heard in the back of my mind the words of Professor Dumbledore, “There are all kinds of courage. It takes a great deal of courage to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.” Friends may not be the most appropriate word to describe those in your party who encouraged you to ignore your conscience, but the sentiment remains. You have given hope and courage to the citizens of our country who are feeling powerless, hopeless, and discouraged. Thank you.

Yesterday I sat with my children (ages 11, 8, and 5) as we watched and listened to your senate speech. Although they could not comprehend every word, the spirit of your message rang true. It was a powerful reminder of the freedom we often take for granted. From a mother’s heart and with renewed hope for the future generation, thank you, Senator Romney, for your integrity and leadership in this time of commotion and confusion. Thank you for your courage to stand alone. Thank you for choosing the harder right over the easier wrong. Your example has encouraged and inspired us to do likewise.
Laura Elekdag, Washington, DC

Aubree Urbanawiz, Aiken, SC

Thank you for having the courage and the integrity to be an impartial juror and vote accordingly. I have long been disheartened by the state of partisan politics and by the sheer number of people who could vote for and support Trump regardless of his actions, behaviors, many of his policies, etc. I have watched, horrified, as so many have defended his words and actions with weak and groundless refutations and as so many in the political sphere have kowtowed to his every whim out of a fear of losing votes, positions and/or elections. This blind following of the cult of political party has been hard to witness. Your vote, your choice to act based on evidence and let the consequence  follow has restored some of the faith I have lost in both our institutions and in humanity. Thank you again and again!
Kandi Timothy, Laie, HI

Sarah McKellar, Driggs, ID

Thank you, Senator Romney, for representing all of us who are sympathetic to conservative principles and causes but are deeply disturbed and alarmed by not only Trump’s behavior but by the Republican Party condoning this national disgrace. You are in the right and they are in the wrong, and I for one of many support you. I wish I could vote for your re-election, but I will try to find leaders of honor and integrity here in Arizona. Thank you for standing up and being willing to be counted when it truly mattered.
Alden Weight, Mesa, AZ

I’m proud of my friend, Mitt Romney. He put his commitment to God above politics and truth above personal danger. There are very few such noble leaders today. Thank you, Mitt, for your courage and nobility. I can envision your father smiling down on his remarkable son!

You have no idea how much your vote has meant to me. In the past few years, I have witnessed deep partisan divides and attacks on truth that have plagued this country and left me with a feeling of hopelessness and despair. Even among church members, I have seen people defend the indefensible, others staying quiet and only a few speaking out. I wondered how we could possibly overcome this incredible obstacle as Americans. You have proved to us that there are things that unite us and that truth does matter. You have given us hope. You have shown what it means to be a true patriot and a man of God. You have answered many of our fervent prayers. In the past 3 years, I have shared on social media many alarm bells that I saw in what was becoming the new normal, deplete of facts and morals. The articles I posted received a few likes here and there, but mostly my church friends stayed quiet. I noticed yesterday, however, when I shared on social media the comments you made explaining your vote, many of my church member friends came out of their shell and liked those comments. Your moral leadership gave them that courage and validated their concerns of this president. It was so refreshing to hear your words and your vote, even though the president is acquitted. You have taken a stand to show that there are things more important than party: truth. I applaud your courage in this dark world where often it seems like truth no longer matters. You will have my vote every time because you have shown that you will put country and God over party and that is what matters most to me. Thank you for your service to this country.
Marci Parker, Spanish Fork, UT

Senator Romney, thank you for upholding your oath before God and our country by voting according to your conscience. I’m proud to call you my Senator.
Michelle Checketts, Herriman, UT

Thank you, Sen. Romney. Please continue to stand for truth. Trump’s lies are a poison in our nation. If Republicans would speak out, it could make a difference.
Laurel Paul, Washington, UT

Thank you for your courage and bravery. It’s given me the impetus to do the same. My covenants with Heavenly Father are more important than my fear. Bless your family and your valiant efforts.
Kristy Lloyd, Kirkland, WA

As you well know, the fight for justice can be exhausting. As I go to work each day at a nonprofit dedicated to promoting justice in our communities and legal system, it takes effort not to be dragged down by the weight of the immense work needed to protect our country’s freedoms. And yet, I’m only carrying a fraction of the weight you carry. Your words given when voting to convict Pres. Trump inspired me and energized me — today, the weight of this work feels a little bit lighter. Thank you for fighting for our Constitution and your example of integrity.

Thank you for choosing conscience over party pressure.
Tara Guzman, Raleigh, NC

Michelle Cannon, Pittsboro, NC

I have no doubts that you understood the immense amount of backlash that would fall upon you and your family by the decision you made yesterday. It pains me so very much to see so many lashing out because you chose to follow your moral compass, to truly review and listen to the evidence provided and to reach a decision you knew you could look back on years from now and feel peace. It has been such a struggle for me to watch so many of our faith blindly support Trump after spending so much time and effort on my own to understand all that has transpired. I appreciate your integrity, your gumption, your courage. I knew Trump would not be impeached. I am sure you knew this as well and yet, you chose the right regardless. Thank you so very much for giving me hope in our system and hope for a future time where our political leaders will act with integrity and strength for good. You will have my support and I am grateful you represent our state. Bless you.
Amy Nelson, Springville, UT

You are a true example of what a politician should be. Thank you. I support you.

Hilary Baird, Vallejo, CA

On a more personal note, I would like to express my regret about my previous opinion about you. Back when you ran against Barak Obama, I had a misinformed opinion about your integrity and patriotism. Now I see that you are willing to risk your career and your standing in your political party in order to uphold the constitution and the integrity of the office of the President. While I still disagree with many of your political views, please know there are millions of Americans like me who are proud to call ourselves citizens of the same great republic as you, Mitt Romney. May God bless you and keep you in this time of trial.
Dale Cannon, Pittsboro, NC

Thank you for doing what was right, when when it was hard. I’m going to hold you up as an example to my sons of what a man in power should act like, just as I’m holding up the president as an example of how to do it wrong.

Allison Shiozawa Miles, Walpole, MA

You bring to mind the scripture Alma 48:17 — Yea, verily, verily I say unto you, if all men had been, and were, and ever would be, like unto Moroni, behold, the very powers of hell would have been shaken forever; yea, the devil would never have power over the hearts of the children of men. If more of our elected officials would have your integrity, no matter on which side of the aisle they sit, our nation would be in a far better place. Thank you for restoring our faith that men and women of integrity can make it in politics and be a force for good. We love you!

Thank you, Senator Romney!!! I am so grateful for your thoughtful deliberation, your careful (and prayerful) reasoning, but most of all for your deep courage for voting as you did in the Senate trial. I have been a lifelong Republican who feels like the GOP has lost its way and shown some truly unethical behavior of late. I love my country far more than my party, and I agree with your vote. I expect you will be facing some awful fallout because of your decision. You and your family will be in the prayers of my family.
Rebecca Knell, Rancho Cordova, CA

Krista Baum, San Francisco, CA

Thank you for your courage. I did not vote for you in the last election but I probably will in the next election (I live in UT). I hope you are feeling some love for the tough decision you made. You give me hope in this polarized political climate we live in. Much love.
Gina Hales, Provo, UT

I do not support a lot of what you stand for. When you came on the TV I was positive I was going to feel uninspired. However, your speech was brave and very genuine. As an atheist, I really enjoyed how you used your knowledge through your religion but didn’t alienate other beliefs. I thought it took a lot of courage, and I was super proud to have you as our senator. Still don’t agree with you on most things but am very proud!
Andrew Finlayson, Salt Lake City, UT

Your integrity is worth more than anything and can’t be bought at any price. Please continue to be a voice of reason.
Amanda Cook Fesperman, LaSalle, IL

So proud of you for doing what is right, knowing there would be terrible consequences for you and your family. I am praying for your protection. As a leader, our president should be telling our nation to be compassionate and respect your right to vote. Not tweeting demeaning attacks. Not encouraging hate. Unfortunately, he cannot handle anyone standing up to him. He is not a true leader. You are. Keep up the good fight!
Brenda Barnes, North Myrtle Beach, SC

Thank you, Senator Romney. While we live in Maryland now, my family lived in Utah when you were elected. I voted for you, and I am grateful for how you represented me here. Thank you for defending the Constitution and our democratic institutions. I am grateful for your integrity.
Annilyn Spjut, Rockville, MD

Ashley Atkin, Fremont, CA

I am proud to be able to thank you for searching your soul and use your belief in right and wrong to vote for witnesses in the impeachment trial and voting for guilty on Trump. Especially in this particular time it seems like there is no truth except for Trump’s truth. I hope that after things settle down that your example can be studied and looked upon as an example of what we as Americans need to use as a guide in the future decision making and how to learn to get things done with others that may have fundamentally different views than themselves. We need folks to mentor our young people and the other Americans that must learn to work together and to respectfully acknowledge other points of view to come up with solutions. Move on with your head up and we will hope that more unity will happen in the future. 💗
Cathy Mitchell, Crystal River, FL

Thank you for choosing what is right over what is easy. This is what I try to teach my children to do and I am grateful for the example you have set for them and for me. Take heart and thank you again.
Kate Herrick, Provo, UT

I have always been a Republican, but first and foremost I am a Christian.  Thank you for doing what you felt was right even it was politically costly and misunderstood. I sincerely believe that is the kind of moral courage that is needed. I once read in “The Common Man” that if it were always profitable to do the right thing, then nothing would separate angels from animals. It has been years, but I believe it was a book about William Tyndale. You stand with the valiant and courageous. Thank you for having the courage to continue to try to make a difference in such a corrupt world.
Tawnya McKee, Tridell, UT

Jasmin Escobar, Nürnberg, UT

Thank you, Senator Romney, for your courage, conviction, and faith. I’ve never been so proud to share my chosen faith with anyone. You’ve helped restore so much hope and dignity to our beloved country and in humanity.
Joelyn Betz, Eagle River, AK

I am so grateful for what you did. I am a moderate, issue-based voter — a former Republican — who since the 2016 election is idealogically unaffiliated with either party. Thank you for representing moderate people of principle like me. I voted for you in 2008, 2012, and again for Utah Senator in 2016. I have never been prouder of you and more grateful for the shining example you are. I am also a devoted LDS homeschool mom and small business owner. We took our kids to your 2018 campaign party in Provo (primary nominee celebration) and it was a proud moment for all of us. I was tempted to write in your name for the 2016 presidential election but voted for Evan McMillan instead. You help me to feel faith in our country again.
Mara Holloman, Provo, UT

My family moved to the state of Utah almost two years ago. Even though my beliefs and values line up with liberal views, I voted for you. I did my research and felt in my gut that you would do what was best for the people of the United States of America. Thank you for doing just that. I am continually impressed with your leadership and especially for your willingness to take a stand for what you believe in even when it is not popular. May God bless you as you represent the beautiful state of Utah and as you stand as a leader in our country. My family supports you.

There are more of us then there are of them who persecute you. You just gained the rest of America. People will remember you and your bravery and history will be kind.

Kara Edwards, Pleasant Grove, UT

Hilary Johnson, Herriman, UT

Thank you for being an incredible human being. I have admired your willingness to “take a stand” since the day you spoke out, warning America of Trump’s true character at the University of Utah. As I watched you state your reasoning for your vote to go against your party, to not only take a stand but STAND ALONE, I saw a man of such integrity. A man such as Moroni, willing to wander alone, unable to deny Christ and his teachings. A man such as Job, willing to put everything on the line except his testimony and his integrity. Thank you, Senator Romney, for your example. One day you will stand before God with your head held high.
Carrie Johnson, South Jordan, UT

Thank you for your integrity and your courage. In your speech declaring your intention to vote that President Trump had abused power, I was particularly moved as you spoke of your desire to uphold your oath before God. My husband is a biblical scholar, and he pointed out to me that “taking the Lord’s name in vain” is less about what you say when you hammer your thumb (though I try to be careful then, too!), and more about whether you make covenants with the intention to keep them, or not. Thank you for upholding your covenant to the American people to defend us and the Constitution. Thank you for your leadership and your honor. Thank you for being someone whose speech I will share with my kids, without fear of bad language and racial slurs and bullying. I can’t share the president’s words with my children these days. But we will watch your speech at “home church” and discuss standing up for our values and our principles. I am grateful you are my senator!

Harper Lee describes you: “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what.” – Atticus Finch, “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Thank you for showing us what courage looks like.

I admit that I did not vote for you for senator, but even before your courageous stand yesterday, observing your opinions and willingness to stand up for what is right and best for the country, I was glad that you had won the race. Senator Romney, thank you so much for being a true American! I’m a member of the LDS church and have never been more proud of a politician in my life! You have restored my hope and faith that there are still people of integrity left in politics. You are a true example of what it means to fear God and not man, for the awful backlash you are receiving for doing the right thing outweighed the option of taking the easy way out. Words can never adequately express the admiration and gratitude in my heart!

I voted for you in 2012. That decision was based on your actions in turning around the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics and as governor of Massachusetts. While my politics have gone to the left of yours since then (a 10-year career as a special education teacher has opened my eyes to some problems in our current political structures) I still believe you are a man of integrity, and your vote on Trump’s impeachment has proven that. Thank you.

“The professional man is in essence one who provides service. But the service he renders is something more than that of the laborer, even the skilled laborer. It is a service that wells up from the entire complex of his personality. True, some specialized and highly developed techniques may be included, but their mode of expression is given its deepest meaning by the personality of the practitioner. In a very real sense his professional service cannot be separate from his personal being. He has no goods to sell, no land to till. His only asset is himself. It turns out that there is no right price for service, for what is a share of a man’s worth? If he does not contain the quality of integrity, he is worthless. If he does, he is priceless. The value is either nothing or it is infinite.” Judge Elbert P. Tuttle, from his commencement address to Emory University in the late 1950s

Your decision Wednesday gave me hope for our country. Sometimes it seems like change is impossible, and that our society is destined to only go further and further down the path of corruption, dishonesty, and self-interest. I know you said that you are only a “footnote” in history, but it is my belief and my hope that you will instead be viewed as a turning point in history, and a rallying figure for those who want to create a better system and a better world. I’ve been able to use you as an example to teach my three young sons the importance of doing what’s right, despite others’ choices. God bless you for your courage and conviction.

I cried watching you speak on the Senate floor. Just as I cried the first time I saw you speak at the opening ceremonies during the Salt Lake Winter Olympics. It was just after 9-11, and my world view had been badly shaken. I don’t remember what you said, but I remember how I felt — reassured. Your decision to stand for truth, justice, and integrity, at great personal sacrifice, gave me hope for our country. Thank you for having the moral courage to do what you felt was right. Senator Romney,
I am a registered Democrat from California and I had lost all faith in the Republican party. I want to thank you for giving me that small ray of hope for your party that I now hold. I am saddened to see you take heat for taking your oath to God seriously and for standing up for our constitution. You became the blinding white light of truth that has revealed the hypocrisy of so many. You have earned my deepest respect and your speech was incredibly moving. I do my dear for you because I know God is in your side. Stay strong and know peace.

  2. Sarah Loveless

People have often asked me why I like you so much. This is why. You are one of the few politicians I would trust to do the right thing because I believe you are sincere and truly want to serve our country. I would vote for you for president again if given the opportunity.

P.S, You deserve all the chocolate milk in the world.

  3. Jill Peay

Thank you for your integrity! You will be remembered for this and your family should be very proud of you. Wish our Senators in Idaho had your integrity.

  4. Sarah Larsen

Thank you Mitt. I was so grateful for your integrity and how you represented yourself, your faith, your state, and your God.

  5. Jeremy Kokkonen

Thank you Senator Romney for your courage and integrity in standing up against peer pressure and standing with your conscience.

  6. Jennifer Bennington

Thank you for putting ethics before partisan politics. I know that you are going to be shredded, and you knew it going in. Then you did it anyhow. That’s my kind of person. I don’t care what party. My hope is that eventually like minded/ethical people of both parties who love our country will move forward with a unity ticket or party that reflects us all. People who can lead the way to resolving our differences and tolerating each other with love when we can’t, as inevitably will be the case from time to time.

When people put themselves on the line for what they know is good and right, they may be surprised to find out how many people align behind them. You may have lost the support of some GOP leaders, and I’m sure that’s going to leave a mark. You may lose support of some voters who have decided to align themselves behind the president at all costs. But you’ve gained so much respect and support from countless others in your party and outside of it. People who are looking for ethical leadership. I have many friends in the LDS church and family in Utah including Salt Lake City, West Jordan, and various surrounding communities. I’m sure this means a lot to them. I hope my nephew is watching and learning . Anyhow, it’s nice to see. You have a lovely family and I wish all of you the best. As you weather inevitable storms, remember you likely won more support than you lost. It just might look a little different. Some red, some blue, some light blue, some pink, some purple. All Americans looking for leaders that will step up and speak truth to power. You did just this.

  7. Jenn Stevenson

I express my gratitude to you for making a prayerful decision and acting upon integrity, rather than popularity. Please know that so many admire and applaud your actions!!!

  14. Donna J Zaninelli

You did the right thing. I know it was a hard desicion and I know they are treating you badly for it. You are the better person. We are all very proud of you!

  15. Lisa McArthur

Thank you for choosing the harder right instead of the easier wrong. Your courage to vote your conscience and stand for truth and uphold our American values makes me so proud to call you my senator. You are on the right side of history here. I wish more senators would’ve done the same. Their silence makes them complicit in following the most tyrannical leader our country has seen.

  16. Taylor Petrey

Thank you for your courage and honesty.

  17. Michelle Raymond

Thank you for standing up for what is true and right. You may feel you stand alone, but you do not. I stand with you. It sickens me to watch honest and good men get fired today for telling the truth. I work at a junior high and that sends a message to our children. I am frightened by where our country is going and have hope that there are still polititians out there like you. With morals. Thank you again for setting an example. I will pray for you and others in this mess.

  18. Megan Wagner

Thanks for doing your duty to be fair and honest!

  19. Stephanie Clark

Thank you, thank you for standing up for what you thought was right, despite the hate and vitriol you knew you would get. If only we had more politicians and people who had this kind of courage and conviction . Thank you for being an example of faith, courage and seeker of truth.

  20. Ed Naylor

    Thank you, sir.

  21. Carí Fifield

    Thank you Senator Romney,

I have to admit to being surprised at your vote in the wake of a walking zombie Republican Congress who votes party over ethics or the common man. You won my admiration with your vote. I have moved far away from believing in Republicans who are rigidly controlled by Mitch McConnell and his power (even more than Trump) and who have refused to look at the social ills and problems in our country and have created policies and laws that leaves so many struggling while supporting the oligarchs. Now with a President that exemplifies the worst of our nation it is discouraging to see them all walk like sheep behind this terrible President. I worry about how much more leeway Trump will now take. I have some hope because you have demonstrated that you can be independent. It is appreciated.

    Carí Fifield

  22. Cameron Benedict

Thank you for your integrity. It’s wonderful that there are still those that will stand for truth no matter the cost.

  23. Kevin Peel

Thank you. You restored my hope that there can still be some integrity in public life.

  24. Galia

Thanks you for giving some hope that an oath of honor of an elected representative still has meaning. Your words were very impactful to somebody like me: a first generation immigrant, working mother of 3 and woman of color. People like me that are scared about how our government And our
Laws are deteriorating and walking backwards to what you see in 3rd world countries. Please be the shining light needed right now. Hope your state recognizes the value of a man that respects his oath above his political welfare.

  25. Cody Wiscomb

    Thank you Senator Romney.
Full disclosure, as a faithful Latter Day Saint and political centrist I so much wanted you to be MY candidate in 2012, but did not vote for you after feeling that opportunism was your watch word rather than “do what is right let the consequence follow”. I respect very much that you have been impartial, following the dictates of your conscience and chosen to face the wrath of those who value party over principle.
Thank you for giving us an example of integrity in public office that we can use to teach our children. When your service to the country is done, this is what I will remember.

  26. KJ Brough

Voting in one of the ‘bluest’ states means the people and propositions I support aren’t represented very often. I was braced to see this result as I watched almost all of the impeachment proceedings and so many reporters predicted no Republican would vote against Trump. Your statement and vote renewed my hope! At least one person voting represented me, even though he wasn’t elected in my state. Thank you for being a hero!

  27. Pam Dozier

I’m not eloquent like those you wrote before me so I just agree with all they said. Thank you for being a moral hero, standing up for what you believe and not being ashamed. You are a wonderful example for our youth today and I know your grandchildren will be proud. Keep up the good work. A lot ofbus are behind you!

  28. Judy Pickett

Senator, thank you so much for voting contrary to the rest of your party when your conscience dictated that it was the right thing to do. Although, you may have felt that you stood alone at that moment, please know that I and many, many others like me were standing with you in spirit. Thank you for representing those of us whose voices are sometimes snuffed out or over-shouted by other, louder voices in our party and country. I appreciate you representing my voice, acting with integrity and doing the difficult right thing.

  29. Laura

Senator, Such a breath of fresh air to witness integrity.
