Dear Senators Feinstein and Harris,
I am a constituent, and proud of your wisdom and leadership. I was a lifelong Republican, until these dark years. I’m grateful for my progressive friends who have extended their patience and mercy towards me as I woke up and learned increased empathy and understanding. I’m currently an independent that leans heavily progressive.
As a woman who has worked in the male-dominated tech field, as a mother who sees the challenges first-hand, raising biracial daughters, the issues that matter most to me include equality, inclusiveness, healthcare for all, and safety. The fact that our nation has been on a course that continually veers away from the issues that matter to me and so many families across this nation, is sobering.
I have been following the news of the impeachment proceedings by listening to the balanced commentary on NPR, as a member of Mormon Women for Ethical Government and religiously reads the clear analysis by intelligent folks like Heather Cox Richardson.
I care about the impeachment proceedings because my key value has always been Truth. Watching our nation devolve and change Truth into something opinion-based has left me utterly ashamed. Truth is immutable. To those who would bend it to their will, it is telling.
I want to see a full and fair trial in the Senate because I believe Truth still matters to the bulk of our humanity. If we expect our world to be a place of goodness, we need all of us to stand and demand it.
I believe that the best way forward is a full, complete trial. We must have transparency. We must have witnesses. We must have the impartiality that McConnell refuses. We must bridge the partisan divide and extend open arms to those who, while differing with us politically, desperately need the courage and safety to be truthful in the face of demeaning, blind loyalty.
I agree with the enclosed statement on impeachment by Mormon Women for Ethical Government. (A copy will be printed separately and included in a folder with all letters.)
