‘Schools Should Be Able to Make This Decision Without Having to Worry About Their Students Being Sent Out of the Country’

Dear Senator McSally, Senator Sinema, and Representative Andy Briggs,

In regards to the recent decision by ICE to rescind visas for foreign students if schools are not in person this fall, I want to express my strong opposition to this decision. There are plenty of reasons for schools to be online, and individual schools should be able to make this decision without having to worry about their students being sent out of the country. I can’t see any benefit from sending away students who are contributing to our economy, improving themselves, and experiencing the best of our country.

Dear Senator Lee, Senator Romney, and Representative Curtis,

I am a middle school teacher here in Utah. I am devastated about ICE’s new rules in regards to foreign students studying in the United States. 

This policy negatively impacts the economy, the universities, and more specifically the international students. This policy will force institutions to choose between putting the health of their students and instructors at risk or losing their international students.

‘I’ve Known and Loved Foreign Students, and It Breaks My Heart’

Dear Senator Bennet, Senator Gardner, and Representative Lamborn,

The ICE policy requiring foreign students to return home or transfer when/if their academic institutions feel it wise to go to online-only classes is unfair, unjustly hard on the students both emotionally and financially, and does nothing positive for U.S. interests or influence in the world.

Can’t we change this? I’ve known and loved foreign students, and it breaks my heart.

We benefit greatly from the perspectives and contributions of our international students. The nationalist views of the current administration are very troubling. These students deserve a chance to be here, to study, and to learn. Please act to protect our international students. They should be welcomed with open arms, not treated like criminals.

Dear Senator Casey, Senator Toomey, and Representative Fitzpatrick,

I am an independent voter living in Hatfield township. I am a mother of two college students and will be attending graduate school myself this fall at the University of Pennsylvania. I know I should not be able to be shocked at the inhumanity of ICE anymore and yet this past week, I was again shocked and disgusted when I learned of the new policy ordering international students whose classes have been moved online to return to their native countries.

Two of my children are college students and they both have friends who are international students. This new policy negatively affects international students in obvious ways. What if their home country does not have good internet access? What if the cost of extra international flights makes it impossible for them to continue their education?

‘I Am Stunned by ICE’s Recent Policy’

I am an independent voter, and I have worked in higher ed for over a decade. I am stunned by ICE’s recent policy to modify the SEVP and severely restrict F-1 and M-1 visas. I have seen firsthand the positive impact that international students have on both the economy and the universities they attend.

‘This Policy Will Have Tangible Adverse Economic Consequences’

Dear Senator Lee, Senator Romney, and Representative Curtis,

I am dismayed to see this administration’s continued attempts to erode legal immigration now prohibiting many foreign students from studying in the United States. The latest ruling regarding international students has me deeply concerned. They pay the highest rates of tuition to colleges and universities — money that often subsidizes the tuition of domestic students. ICE’s recent decision to force students to leave the country if they cannot access in-person classes due to the pandemic is unfair on many levels. I want my representatives to understand that this policy will have tangible adverse economic consequences and may end up aggravating attempts to control the COVID-19 virus. I would ask that all our students — foreign and domestic — be granted the ability to continue their studies without fear for their health or possible deportation.
