I am deeply concerned about the proposed changes to asylum policy. This proposal essentially eliminates protection for people who are fleeing domestic and gang-related violence. It unrealistically raises the standard people must meet when they arrive at the border to nearly unattainable standards. It weakens due process and fairness for asylum seekers.
This proposal is unfair, unjust, and inhumane.
The United States has a decades-long history of providing refuge for families and individuals who are seeking safety. If we look at history we can see what atrocities can happen when people are being persecuted and have nowhere to flee for refuge. If passed, this proposal will put us on the wrong side of history.
This issue strikes at the very core of the values I believed America was built upon: equality, freedom, justice, welcoming newcomers, and providing opportunities for all. It also strikes at the very core of my own personal values. My Christian faith implores me to reach out to the stranger and provide refuge and relief for those who are fleeing persecution and danger.
We should NOT inflict more harm upon vulnerable people. We should NOT make it more difficult for asylum to be granted. We must grant protection to those who are fleeing domestic and gang violence. People seeking asylum should not be denied because they did not apply for asylum in countries they passed through. Anyone seeking asylum should be provided with due process and access to an attorney.
