Dear Senators Cortez Masto and Rosen,
As your constituent and as the Environmental Sustainability Specialist for the Nevada Chapter of Mormon Women for Ethical Government, I wanted to thank you for your support of conservation efforts and effective environmental policies both at the state and federal level.
Thank you for helping to protect critical habitats in places like the Desert National Wildlife Refuge, Tule Springs and Red Rock Conservation Area. Your work on conservation is helping Nevada lead the way toward the important goal of protecting 30% of our lands and waters by 2030.
The 30×30 Initiative is bold but important policy. It is part of the solution to mitigate climate change. Our natural habitats absorb carbon and other natural gases, keeping them out of the atmosphere. As Nevada is home to two of the fastest warming cities in the country, this is welcome and severely needed policy. Not just for Nevadans, but for us all.
Nevada has another opportunity to contribute 384,000 acres toward the 30×30 goal by designating Ave Kwa Ame as a national monument. This beautiful land is sacred to 12 Indigenous Tribes who stewarded this area long before Nevada statehood. We must preserve the rock art and cultural heritage of this special land. We must protect the biodiversity and the unique species that live in the area.
A new national monument in Clark County will also provide a much needed economic boost, especially to the communities of Searchlight, Laughlin and Boulder City. Our outdoor recreation economy is booming.
Thank you for your thoughtful approach to environmental policy.
