Dear Senators Jones and Shelby,

I am a constituent who reaches out to my representatives when I feel strongly about issues. I am a mother of three, an artist, and currently obtaining my MSW (master’s in social work) from Samford University. I care deeply about ethical practices in all aspects of society, from community issues to Washington politics.

I have been following the news of the impeachment proceedings by listening to a significant portion of the hearing in the House and trial in the Senate.

I try to listen to a wide range of sources to discern for myself the context of issues, especially the impeachment proceedings. I found many of the career diplomats to be credible witnesses, with dignified testimonies. I found it particularly disturbing that President Trump uses his personal lawyer in matters that affect the diplomatic relations and national security of the U.S. I am disheartened at the extreme divide and lack of objectivity that representatives from both sides are exhibiting and continue to staunchly uphold in order to protect their own reputations. I feel this is a disservice to the citizens of the United States. I care about the impeachment proceedings because I care about the discernment of truth, and the discovery of evidence. I expect the same from you and I implore you to insist that witnesses be heard and request the full disclosure of documentation from the Trump administration.

I want to see a full and fair trial in the Senate because that is the precedent set forth and the expectation of the American people. I can recognize smoke screens, deflection, redirection, and every tactic being utilized as an attempt to absolve accountability and circumvent the constitution. In Strengths Based Leadership, Tom Rath describes how top-performing leadership teams overcome conflict. They seek out evidence, data, and remain objective. Amongst differing views, they remain united in seeking truth. Failing teams, on the other hand, personalize disagreement and create territorial divides (Rath, 2008). I request that you avoid the pitfalls of partiality to party in this matter and insist on asking, seeking, and finding in order to protect and preserve the Constitution of the United States of America. I hope and pray that you are listening to the correct voices, those of whom you represent, regardless of party.

I agree with the enclosed statement on impeachment by Mormon Women for Ethical Government.

Sincerely,
Janelle (Alabama)
