Dear Senators Crapo and Risch,

I am a republican, physician, father of three, soon to be four, and a long-time Idahoan with deep Idaho roots on both sides of my family. My father was in the Air Force and I grew up living on military bases, learning patriotism and respect for my local and national elected leaders. I value the system of government I live under and support as a U.S. citizen.

I have been following the impeachment proceedings across multiple news agencies and sources. I am disturbed by the political stances by both Democrats and Republicans regarding the impeachment. It seems that Democrats are stating many things as fact that have not yet been corroborated, and the Republicans are refusing to acknowledge that President Trump’s actions are at least inappropriate, if not fully reprehensible.

As a republican, I worry that President Trump’s actions do need to be checked. I fear that he continues to expand the reach of the executive branch beyond what is appropriate. If he is culpable of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, it should be fully vetted and he should be held accountable through a full and fair trial. If there is nothing to condemn, let it be seen and let him be justified through a full and fair trial in the Senate. Please call witnesses and encourage Senator McConnell to hold a full, impartial impeachment trial.

I recognize it can be hard to separate yourself from partiality in something as divisive as this. As my elected senator, I ask that you support and encourage your fellow senators to support the full and fair process of impeachment as dictated by the constitution. I believe that the fair and constitutional handling of this impeachment will have a much greater effect on our lives, our freedoms and the entire United States in the long run, than the actual outcome of the impeachment. It sets a standard of impartial justice and the rule of law that will continue to serve our country for years to come.

I thank you for considering my letter and appreciate any response you deem appropriate.

I agree with the enclosed statement on impeachment by Mormon Women for Ethical Government.

Sincerely,
Vaughn (Idaho)
