Dear Senators Gardner, Bennet, and McConnell,

I am a seventeen-year-old constituent of Colorado. Though I am not considered old enough to vote now, I will meet the age requirements by the November elections. Of course, no one is too young to care about or be affected by the decisions of their political representatives, and I am certainly no exception.

I have been following the news of the impeachment proceedings by listening to the hearings, reading a wide variety of news sources, and discussing all of this with my family and classmates. You and I are alike in our exposure to diverse viewpoints concerning this matter.

I care about the impeachment proceedings because I don’t think a person with the low moral quality and disregard for justice I see in Donald Trump deserves to be President of the United States, and I don’t think the American people deserve such a man as their leader. President Trump has violated the Constitution by manipulating foreign countries for his own political gain, and if the Senate does not impeach him, it is telling him and any future presidents that they are above the law.

I want to see a full and fair trial in the Senate so that we can all completely understand President Trump’s actions and act according to our Constitution and shared values. I still have faith in the power of democracy and bipartisanship, and I believe that the Senate is capable of exacting justice.

I believe that the best way forward is for the Senate to learn everything it can from any remaining witnesses. It would be ideal if every Senator were to vote according to what they believe is best for the country, not their own political interests, but I recognize that this is not a realistic expectation for many of your esteemed colleagues. Therefore, I think an acceptable alternative would be having an anonymous vote. However, I hope that you will do what is right no matter who’s watching.

You have a unique opportunity to make a huge difference in the world. You are so fortunate to have a voice in the Senate. Please do not waste it. Please have courage and place your country over your party and your own politics. I will consider the nature of your participation in the impeachment proceedings when I vote in Colorado’s elections.

I agree with the enclosed statement on impeachment by Mormon Women for Ethical Government.

Sincerely,
Adah (Colorado)
